Benefits of Retiring in Hilton Head/Bluffton

We have many retirees moving to Beaufort County in SC due to the natural beauty of the area, climate, golf, variety of communities and activities, low property taxes and various tax breaks and deductions.

Another plus specific to Bluffton is its location:

In terms of property taxes, there are tax breaks for retirees and primary residences. My out of state clients often tell me that their property taxes were much higher than the ones that we have in Beaufort County in SC.

Here is a county website which will help you estimate taxes For example properties in the Colleton River in Bluffton are in district 600. Please also double check with the auditor’s office the estimates from the website (843) 255-2505 . I can give you the tax numbers for the properties you are interested in- just let me know. I can also look up the tax history for each of the properties.

Here is a form for a discounted taxes for a primary residence.

You may also want to check if you can qualify for the homestead exception in addition to the primary residence tax break. I am attaching a form for the primary residence property tax break. According to the SC Department of Revenue, 'The Homestead Exemption is a complete exemption of taxes on the first $50,000 in Fair Market Value of your Legal Residence for homeowners over age 65, totally and permanently disabled, or legally blind.' Please see this document for more information and feel free to give them a call to verify any information.

In terms of income taxes according to the SC Department of Revenue 'Social Security benefits are not taxable in SC', 'An income tax deduction of up to $15,000 is allowed against any South Carolina taxable income of a resident individual who is 65 or older by the end of the tax year.
